Hey everyone my first time here. My name is Jim Bauman and I played for two teams in USAFE. I was assigned to Neu Ulm from 74-75 and in those two years I ws permissive TDY to Weisbaden to play ball then in 75-76 I was PCSed to Sembach and played for the Tigers.

MY question is in 1975 the USAFE All-Stars played the Univeristy of Rhode Island in I think November of that year. Was Rhode Island the only college team that came to Europe and played in the All-Star game??

Hello Jim,

Welcome to the board!! I haven't heard of any college teams playing USAFE Football teams, but I not an expert either. In my experience and knowledge teams have played local (community) teams. I'm glad you shared the story of the Rhode Island team. Hopefully someone out there will hit this board and provide some information.

Thanks,

Rob

Are you sure it was in 1975 and not 1973? I've seen a mug depicting the game and the College Football Data Warehouse notes the game took place on Nov 22, 1973 in Frankfurt.
Web link is http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_iaa/atlantic10/rhode_island/opponents_records.php?teamid=81

If I find a picture of the mug, I will post.

Hey Jim,

My name is Oscar Scott. The game was the Turkey Bowl and was played at Rhein Main in 73. The game was set up by Maj Gen Saddler (Wg Comdr Rhein Main - Then a Col) and Lt Gen Jones (USAFE Comdr - Ramstein). I am in the process of getting all the pictures together to forward to Jim for posting to the site. The game drew a lot of attention from many colleges. Quite a few scouts (such as Eddie Robinson (Gramlin) visited Europe and many scholarship in Football, Track and Basketball were awarded. I was at Heyford 65 - 69, Rhein Main 70 - 74 and Chicksands 75 - 81. I later (Civ) coached at Heyford 84 - 87 and Rhein Main 90 - 91

Very Happy Oscar thanks for the info on the game...I had just gotten to Neu Ulm in early December 73. Since I was a GSU we didn't have the sports as the bases did. I was lucky enough to have known the guys at Matrerial Control in Weisbaden and lucky again to go permissive TDY 2 years..
